Battlezone is well known for its great story line and with the right director, Battlezone: The Movie should be equally good. It's a great idea and I'm surprized no one made it happen by now. Maybe they tried but the legal issues torn between Activision and Atari stopped them. The same issues that are blocking the creation of BZ3.
I still remember the feeling I had 11 years ago, when I was passing single player missions for the first time, the feeling that makes you wanna see ASAP what will happen in the next mission. It is something I havnen't seen in any game before or after, and I doubt I ever will.
Battlezone is like an old wine or an old movie. It gets better as the years pass by, cause (most) new games (movies) don't have that something... the soul. I feel you man. It's just the eternal Battlezone addiction we'll have to cope with I still get goosebumps from the incredibly strong narrative during the loadscreens, it's so literary it's like an unfolding novel and a game, the best of both worlds, not often you see that. And Battlezone 3, such a waste of what could be a great game, well, depending on what approach they'd take on it. If it were the EA approach (one raped C&C after the other, the original Westwood they killed has been in it's grave for many years) I'd rather see them work on Battlezone 3 when it's cold in hell. It saddens me how often game developers ditch the concepts with great depth and plot in favor for a action overpacked hyperactive shooter gameplay just to make it more accessible and commercial.

I was talking more along the lines of a real hollywood movie. But there are what we call fan films. Red vs. Blue is a good example. I do remember hollywood tried to make a Halo movie - which they did not even get past a trailer for money reasons.
Red vs. Blue is a series that is made up from the start. We certainly can do that with bz, but a real hollywood, or even a 3d animation movie, would just blow my mind.
A fan series like RvB would be the first step I think. Bz would have to be a huge name like Halo to try to be a movie though. Any time you want to do a 'fan series', as I call it, I would be overwilling to help.

lol right, listen. The idea of a bunch of gamers making a battlezone film using FRAPS is beyond stupid. For even the most BASIC 1h+ film with virtually no special effects whatsoever you are going to need many thousands of pounds/dollars/euros, very good quality cameras, tripods, production equipment and software like finalcut or premiere. Furthermore you would need a team of at least 10 or so with a large amount of experience in producing video. Even then we're talking about a year long production time, probably more - and this is assuming these people are friends/collegues and not people who've never actually met. Making a game based on tanks battles on the moon and mars? Forget it. Seriously.

Look, who the hell said that this was could be a big hollywood thing. For all we can do, we could get a good amount of Bz promotion just uploading to YouTube.

Who says making a Fraps film is stupid? Thomas Edison looked pretty dang stupid until he finally made a working light bulb. As for YouTube promotion, I'm making videos of Battlezone and Red Odyssey single player missions and uploading them to my YouTube account. Not on my home dial up connection of course, but about once per week when I have access to fast Internet.

Yes a film captured on sets and stages is very much beyond our reach, and surely everyone here realizes that just as much as you, and I also agree. But anyone who realizes that knows we shouldn't aim that high, a Battlzone movie will never realize with such a goal from the start. And hey; It's the 21'st century film making has became a lot more accessible with animated films and machinimas. If we never try we'll never win. And surely we shouldn't expect to much of the first shorts we'd make. But it'll be fun, get us some experience and mostly; It'll spread the word, and that's what we'd mostly need. A dying community isn't getting anyone anywhere. Really I think we need to do a lot more to reach that group that loves Battlezone but just never heard of it. If we'd make PR one of the key efforts of this community I'm convinced that will breath the much needed life in the player base. Also, a full feature film is well beyond pretty much any game community, it's just way to much work, and without a publisher backing the project, it's guaranteed to halt dead in it's tracks half way to the finish because of whatever reason (like the game died or some key figure quits), but a movie doesn't have to be 2 hours long, doing shorts or a series would be great for a Battlezone movie.

I really like the idea Telsa, but I think we should find a different platform, and really, dialog balloons? Really reckon we'd better just do some voice recording. It's just that I don't see people getting wild all on dialog balloons and spreading it into viral

For voice all you need is a working microphone and Windows Sound Recorder. I use Audacity (Stable 1.2 version) for editing audio, it's free. It's also open source if you have programming knowledge and want to expand it. I do not currently have a working microphone/headset, plus I don't know if I am a very good voice actor.

I think this is the start to something great to be had.
If someone could think up a decent storyline with good dialog and all, I am sure that we can make this work. Tesla seems to have a good storyline to me. A good start would be if everyone gave their own little storyline that is reasonable and that is not too complicated to handle while filming.
As for filming (and audio), after we decide on the best overall story, we may have to use several dm (for fights) and strat (for bases) maps, and maybe we can even make our own!!! All the maps would have to be the same type, for instance, if the story is on Mars then all the maps would have to look like Mars.
But lets take this one step at a time. Storylines! Anyone else?

Well I still seriously doubt it'll ever happen but if you want to try I might as well be of some use to this thread. For editing use either Jahshaka, Wax or perhaps Windows Movie Maker if you don't want to pilfer software (but bear in mind you'll be using it for nothing more than a non-profit fan project). If you're happy to 'acquire' certain products (which are horredously overpriced anyway) I'd 100% recommend Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 (not any previous versions) myself but I also believe Sony Vegas is a very good video edit suite. A great little free audio recorder and editor is Audacity, it does most things OK but it's effect plugins are pretty awful and it's interface is frustrating. Much better though, Wavelab or Soundforge are available courtesy of Anonymous. edit: don't think that because you are not making a Hollywood budget film you won't need proper software suites to do it. You will, and I guarantee the above software will do the job well.
