Actually I don't think it has anything to do with Vista to be honest.
I got a virus on my primary machine, reinstalled the OS and tried to reinstall BZ, got it in... Applied my patch and although I'm using the same machine configured the same way, the patch doesn't work for me now either, which I might add is a wee bit strange.
I'll be working on a fix for that issue in the near future, however I have a feeling the fix is going to take a little advanced footwork on behalf of those installing it, as the patch seems dependent on identifying the game files before it applies the patch, which is actually a bit irritating.
I'll update you all when I get a fix, but yes I am well aware of this extremely unfortunate fact now

FYI I guess....
First of all some of us are a bit thick despite being programmers or rocket scientists, and don't realise that we already have microsoft backwards compatibility software installed.
I've tried installing 1.4M on four different machines with the following results:
1. xp SP3 with GEforce7800 on AMD Athlon - it's rockin!
2. vista Ultimate on acer laptop 2Ghz with radeon x2500 (and MS Backwards compatibility software) - throws a filthy error at direct x render time and freezes. I reckon it's acer and radeon being crap though - the graphics card config (catalyst control centre) is stuck in basic mode. - i still can get it to work windowed at 640x480 but it feels like i'm a microsurgeon. Acer can suck my little pink balls.
3. ASuS laptop about 3 years old pentium with plain old shared video and vista basic - missling dll's so needs backwards compatibility
4. Dell XPS Brand new tokyo drift style thing with all the bells and whistles - no go, probably needs MS backwards compatitbility.
I hope this helps. I got hopeful to fixing these issues with dark oddity's post but the link to download his actual solution is busted. If anyone has it, i'd appreciate the db for import.
Thanks
vs

guys, as darkoddity and i already conlcluded (check our last posts here), this patch isn't working.
if you have xp and dx9 graphic card, bz will work like a charm. but if you have vista and/or dx10 card you might experience some problems.
there isn't universal solution... yet. we try to deal with every problem separately. best thing to do is to post your system specs and describe the problem you are having.
if you have dx10 problem, in most cases, old driver (1 year or more) is helpful.

As said before, this "patch" isn't working. DO probably removed it from his site for good.
You should try things that were helpful for most people;
If you have Vista:
1. Add msvcp50.dll to your Bz folder.
2. Install Indeo codec.
3. Turn OFF User Account Control (UAC).
4. Run Bz as Administrator.
5. Try OS compatibility mode.
If you have dx10 card:
1. Try different graphic card drivers backwards, from newest to oldest.

Yeah, I'm sorry I haven't done an update here. The patch was removed from my site due to to it not working.
I will be assembling a new patch this weekend since I'll be able to set a little bit of time aside for it.
I'll update you all this friday as that is my saturday.

G'day and thanks.
Just an update for you guys on my experiments. I've reduced it to the video card driver problem, but being a laptop I can't affect it much. The game UE's immediately after attempt to play video. It works fine however, in windowed mode. - it must be the directX 10 thing.
In this particular situation, my problem becomes radeon and catalyst control centre software not working allowing advanced editing of settings.
I've got it working on two other vista machines just fine, so many thanks for pooling your knowledge.
