I have noticed the reduction in the amount of lag in games with such an option. Star Wars Battlefront 2 has an option for the host for him not to play but for him to volunteer his computer to handle all of the heavy work, while others play. While he does this, his screen displays the whole map and all objects, friendly, neutral, or enemy, are displayed. In order to play again, he has to leave, which ends the game for everybody.
For example... I have recieved my Netbook, but I still have my old comp. I want to create a game with my old comp so I can do other things...I select the dedicated option and start the match.
Option #1: There is 8 empty player slots. lol wut? Eight? Where is your old comp Guren? The old comp is removed from the 1st slot to have an 8 player game. The alias is in a special slot only for the host. In strat, 4 empty slots with one special. 8 player DM and 4 player strat...
Option #2: 9 Person DM? 5 Person Strat?
Imagine if this was possible with option #1... A few of the "Lobbybots" would have no excuse to sit in the lobby. Two of them should make a dedicated DM or Strat for others to play, because then we have the "Lobby leave-rejoiners" actually stay. I would gladly volunteer my computer for such a task and I'm sure other people would too.
For myself... I could make my Old comp keep a dedicated DM online all of the time until I get an INTERFAIL. (My INTERFAIL happens when I'm online for 12 hours and the router "skips" for a milisecond, making me lose connection to the Internet.)
Take Spork for example... This poor lad is stuck at home most of the week, but this has allowed the community constant protection against hackers. Now... What if Spork is gone? If Spork had a good connection, and while he was "in town", he could have his Laptop host the dedicated DM and the "Lobby leave-rejoiners" actually stay, and that increases the number of players on the server at one time.
BattleDroid42 when away, BFT when lobby idle, and even Assman could do it too.
Seems like a good idea but probably not practical in Battlezone, but it's just an idea.

theoretical you could make a custom map that has more than 8 people on it(both strat and Dm ) but some people will be lagging TO THE next demisnon. now you think of that i should make a completely flat 8 person strat map i forgot were in this post i read this but its ether here http://www.battlezone1.org/ia-mission-tutorial-t1135.htmlor in the map making tutorial that cam with bz. but its in there somewere

I'm talking about having your computer become a dedicated server for a DM or Strat game.

You probably made this thread with good intentions, so I'll try not to be too harsh on you...
1. You can host a game (without playing) on one computer, while doing something else on other, even now, without dedicated-thing option. I do it all the time. In fact, I must have done it over 1000 times already, for all those dummies who are "above" hosting, but ready to join anything. I've also seen few others doing it; that's what BZ supporters do.
2. Spork doesn't protect you from hackers. I would really like to hear who put that silly thought in your head? I doubt you did it alone. Anyhow, hack protection is a "job" of those who own and run the server, players can't possibly save you. And FYI, not so long ago Battlezone needed protection from hacker Spork, the same Spork you are referring to now. Next time, if you want to praise someone, be sure you are praising the right person or at least try to avoid right person seeing you praising the wrong person.
3. Spork should try not to host games. He's enough problem as a joiner, especially when he "doesn't" know that his bro is downloading in the next room, which gives Spork nice advantage of 500+ ping.
4. This topic is not even for 1.5 Archive section, where rejected ideas go. It has nothing to do with 1.5. Moved.

This won't happen for BZ but I'm going to post anyway in a metaphorical discussion ... Mr. Spock wrote: 1. A player doing what you're saying is taking up a "player slot." That would be a 7 player game if the host does nothing. What I'm talking about is the host is out of sight - out of mind, and he doesn't take up a slot of a player that wants to play. Mr. Spock wrote: 2. Spork doesn't protect you from hackers. I shouldn't have said anything about hackers, spork, and hacker protection. I was trying to illustrate Spork being availible, but I clearly didn't form that part of the post correctly. I know Spork isn't the guy that bans, and he's told us of his background. I dun goofed. Mr. Spock wrote: 3. Spork should try not to host games. Not in a blue moon that this would've even be considered, but it was an idea.

I don't see the point of hosting a game without playing. I only host games when I want to play and nobody else is hosting a game. When I host a game, my ping seems to spike when people join and leave a lot. Other than that it works "OK".

Hosting a game is important whether you actually play or not. Others, who are too impatient to wait and don't know how to click "CREATE GAME" will join the game and others will follow. In no time, you will most likely have a full game. I can't believe I actually wrote that post a year ago.
