Here's a ready made game engine to build the next generation of BattleZone on and the best part is it's free or you can make a commercial game with it for a small license fee. There is also a Unity engine that is free or up to 200 USD for indie games but i don't know anything about that engine. 11-05-2009 Epic Games, Inc. announces the launch of the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), a free edition of Unreal Engine 3 that provides community access to the award-winning toolset like never before. This software release is available to anyone interested in using 3D game engine technology, including game developers, students, hobbyists, researchers, creators of 3D visualizations and simulations, and digital filmmakers. Anyone can start working with the industry-leading Unreal Engine 3 toolset by downloading UDK at http://www.udk.com, where detailed product features, technical documentation, commercial licensing terms, support resources and more are also available. http://www.unrealtechnology.com/

I have never understood why someone would do anything except add more ships/weapons and gameplay to that game. It has the better game engine already. No offense to Avatar but why o why would the community convert it to another game engine. If this Unreal engine is so good please don't even consider wasting time putting some old worn out game onto it. Build Battlezone III for Christs sake!

Well, if Battlezone got converted to the newer engine and it still played the same with no technical issues, it'd be great.

You know, one could make Bz3 that is more compatible with newer PC versions ike Windows 7 and Windows Vista. That's the only thing I'd really would want new.

He is on these boards as of today.
The engine sounds like a good idea, but Ken said he is not much of a graphic programmer (as stated on the BZU boards). If anyone has expertise in that area...sure, it may start some sparks. But I don't think it's as easy as copy and pasting everything from the BZ1 engine to this one. There's going to be a lot of internal modernization (which is one thing Ken is trying to do already) going on to make it take full advantage of the engine. This is why I think we should start recruiting fresh & ripe fruit from programming-forums if we really want to make a spiritual successor to BZ.
This probably won't happen unless people start putting forth an effort...so far it's just forum talk and no exchanging of IM/Skype information.
