Be lucky, some people don't even have broadband access yet (known as the last-mile problem). Talk to Sporkinator and he might have a few things to say about this :)

I have High-speed DSL... I'm good.

If Verizon censors websites then it becomes an evil Corporation. Has Verizon been denying access to websites?

Solving the "last mile" problem costs much more money. You have permits, city officials, lawyers, small communication businesses complaining, zoning permits, construction, FCC codes etc to deal with to get everything up and running. To upgrade existing lines, it's much cheaper since all they have to pay for is the digging, city ordinance permission to re-dig, and materials.

You do realize you don't need to go with Verizon, correct? You can go with AT&T, Cox, Comcast etc if they are set up in your area. I believe it's National law that one company cannot have a hold of any one area--they must lease/share their lines with other companies that want to provide in the area (they pay for the line leasing). They may also be re digging because you have new telecommunication companies popping up everywhere, and Verizon may have needed to upgrade their infrastructure to accommodate them.

I still remember my 350 ping days in Counter Strike on my 56k. Oi, to think I got excited when my ping dropped to 275 for 3 seconds

I'm jealous of your upload speed. I have to pay extra for 2 mbps here in England, and it ends up costing £50 ($80?) per month.

England has to pay by the speed and ONLY 2 Mbps for $80? I think we get 14 Mbps for $40.

Just for laughs, I did a broadband speed test on dial up.
Image
I think the test is wrong. It says my ping is 1178, but it's 250 against furykiller, 300-400 against others on a good day. Also it says my upload is faster than my download. There's no way that can be right.

I did another test, after a fresh reboot and reconnect:

Apparently I do have faster upload than download.

The servers listed are different. One is approximately 50 miles from you and the other is within 50 miles. If that's your ISP servers, I think you should give them a ring and tell them you only want to connect to the <50 miles server =)

You'd think with the size and infrastructure of Dallas it'd be faster than that!
