I just returned to bz 1998 after about 11 years. I finally got it up and running using the microsoft compatibility tools per recommendations here. I have a saitek st290 joystick. The joysticks have changed since bz was released. There is no option to select my joystick from the list. I tried default joystick with no luck. I plugged in the joystick and rebooted everything but I get nothing. The only thing that works right now is my ch yoke usb that I use for my flight simming. The yoke works okay but I don't know how to assign keys to the buttons so I only have limited functionality with the buttons. Any help would be appreciated. Also I have the white dots/blocks due to video issues that I have read about here. It is likely that the video card that I am using is too far advanced for what was available back when bz was released. Thanks Jim

I downloaded the new 1.5 patch and things are much improved. It now has the screen resolution to match my monitor and the white flashes are gone. Now for the joystick problem. It still has the same joystick menu and my saitek st290 is not there. Is there a way to add this joystick to the list? I get nothing when I plug it in. No movement nothing. I am having a hard time using my ch yoke because I can't really center the gun very good on a target and I am getting wiped out every time.

If you can't find a fix for this, you can look up a program called Xpadder. You can create a custom mapping for your joystick and you won't have to change any options in BZ. You'll just have to run Xpadder in the background while playing.

Does this software work with all joysticks? I did a search and the description was for gamepads. Does it function the same way for joysticks? Are there any other fixes out there before I try that? Thanks

You can customize to just about anything. Its main purpose is for gamepads, since they are generally less compatible with games, but you could get it to work with a joystick. I have it and I believe there are joystick options. Basically the program just simulates mouse movement and keyboard presses. So you could tell the program to interpret pushing the joystick forward as moving the mouse forward and etc. Just lemme know in a PM if you have any problems setting it up.

I got it done. I found a check box on the joystick profile in Win 7 that gave the option for using the joystick with older games. I checked this box and all of my axis controls work. I am still using the xpadder in the background to map some of the joystick keys.
