Battlezone 1

I'm having a really hard time getting everything to the portal on time on mission 11 of the Black Dogs campaign (where you rescue your recycler, hold out for a half-hour or so, then beeline for the portal before it's destroyed). On my last attempt, I recycled my armory and turrets and left at least a minute or so before the initial message started, but my recycler still didn't make it to the portal in time. Is there another viable way to tackle this mission, like setting the base up somewhere closer to the portal?

Hint: You're not actually supposed to make it. Only head for the portal when told to do so.
