I got this to work right in Vista 64 Ultimate with nVidia 9500 just by using the XP SP2 compatibility mode. The only hangup is that I don't get digits indicating unit IDs in the radar map when I select a unit type (eg. offensive/defensive/utility). That makes it hard to pick the right unit in a group, such as one close by versus one far away. What can I check for that? I also tried the full Vista fix using the downloaded MS compatibility utility but if anything that made it worse. (It now crashes at startup with an exception, and I need to undo that.) Hardware mode seems to work fine.

It's your Nvidia card mate, no fix for it it appears so far. I get the same problem in my games, so i usually run single player in software mode so I can actually see what the hell is what, and what way to look.

Always play in Hardware mode whenever possible.
If you end up having to play in software mode, you can try to keep your FPS as close to 60 as possible by using highest resolution, and/or increasing visibilityRange in configuration utility/render.cfg.
Good luck with your tech issues. I can't help you because I don't have Vista.

It's not a Vista Problem, It's NVIDIA cards. In Hardware mode the problem makes all the green unit circles into solid ones with no letters or numbers, so you can't tell which offensive unit is which, or which Nav beacon is which on a map. and the compass points become white squares, so you can't choose direction easily on the close up map. you have to switch to overview map. Because this hampers your adaptability it makes strat really difficult. Luckily my FPS in Software isn't ridiculously high, around 90-100, not that I play often recently, or am that good when I do.

It is not a BZ option so only thing you can do is to try out new NVidia drivers after every new release (every month), hoping they will fix it. I would also try playing with NVidia control panel... maybe something checked or unchecked in there could fix it...

Thanks. So this works fine with cards from other vendors?
Any idea what DirectX API BZ is using to draw the waypoints and compass arrows? The ideal way to get it fixed is to get a small code sample to submit to nVidia.
