FIX for BZ1.4O on Win XP 64 Pro with 4+ GB of RAM

Step 1) Follow DarkOddity's excellent video tutorial HERE (Edit by admin: video not longer available) and get the Compatibility Administrator up and running. Once you've begin editing the application fix, there are a few differences for settings you'll have to select.

Under Operating System Modes, Windows XP SP2 is probably greyed out. That's fine - Select None. In the box to the right (Additional Compatibility Modes) scroll down and choose Windows XP.

On the next page - Compatibility Fixes, choose these options:
DisableThemes
EmulateHeap
ForceAVIWindow
GlobalMemoryStatusTrim <----- This is the big one!
LoadLibraryCWD
RestoreSystemCursors
VirtualRegistry
WinXPVersionLie <------ another important one

Now just complete everything as laid out in the video tutorial. Remember to start BZ in windowed mode for your first launch. Good Luck!

After following these directions, i still can't start the game. I get "bzone.exe - Application Error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application."

Bzconfig.exe is also unable to find battlezone.

Oh snap, that worked. I've been used to getting a message saying DEP prevented a program from running normally, so i didn't think of that this time. Thanks man.

Thanks, usnavyfish and everybody!
I just could not have started this game under WinXP x64 with 8 GB RAM until I have found this topic!
The errorbox from Battlezone application was:
Quote:
Sorry, there is not enough memory to continue.
Please make sure that you have at least 50MB free on your hard drive and that virtual memory is not disabled.

My HW/SW configuration is:
Quote:
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version 2003 Service Pack 2

My solution was to follow the steps:
1) Download and install Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5
2) Run the Compatibility Administrator application
3) Select a Custom Databases entry
4) Menu -> Database -> Create New -> Application Fix... [Ctrl+P]
5) Fill in the data, name Battlezone, vendor Activision, path to bzone.exe file, and click Next
6) Inside Operating System Modes list select None, since Microsoft Windows XP is grayed out, without additional compatibility modes, and click Next
7) Toggle GlobalMemoryStatusTrim into enabled, and click Next
8) Everything is configured, so click Finish
9) Select the newly created application fix named "Battlezone"
10) Menu -> Database -> Run Program F5
Since then, the application works fine even though the actual operating system has 8 gigabytes of RAM on board!
You can read the description of the fix from the System Database -> Compatibility Fixes -> GlobalMemoryStatusTrim:
Quote:
This compatibility fix modifies the pagefile and physical memory status so that it reports 2 gig of pagefile and 1 gig of physical memory. This is for use with 64 bit machines which can have more than 2 gig of memory. A COMMAND_LINE can be added to specify a different pagefile and physical memory size. Example: COMMAND_LINE="2147483647,536870911" would set a 2 gig pagefile and a 512 meg physical memory. You should not, of course, use negative numbers or a number higher than 2 gig.

The errorbox doesn't appear when I run the application that way, though it appears when I run the application directly from explorer still.
Note, that Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5 already has a configuration for Battlezone listed in System Database -> Applications -> Battlezone, but it doesn't contain GlobalMemoryStatusTrim among the fixes, and thus is useless with my HW/SW configuration.

This tutorial is for WindowsXP, not for 7. Uninstall wrong ACT patch or you will never get BZ to work.

Oh hell yeah! I love these forums. This works for RO as well. I used the bz98 installer.

Actually, the solution for this is even simpler, as I described here, only 1 fix-check is needed (2 if using green cursors), but usnavyfish and KoichiSenada posted it before me, so...

Mr. Spock wrote:
On my WinXP 64bit I have to use MS ACT to be able to run BZ, due having 4GB of RAM. Instead using existing and not working BZ fix I made my own and selected only 2 compatibility fixes:

  • GlobalMemoryStatusTrim - for avoiding "Sorry, there is not enough memory to continue. Please make sure that you have at least 50MB free on your hard drive and that virtual memory is not disabled." message
  • RestoreSystemCursors - for avoiding remaining cursors after i exit the game, but keeping them while in the game. :)

I've been running it with just global memory status trim. I have run into a few glitches, such as green cursors, but it is pretty rare. Sometimes the game doesn't stretch quite all the way across the screen. I was able to fix that by restarting the game. I might add in some more modifiers just to cut down on those glitches.
