How does a person join a sync join game after it has started?

As far as I know, I joined in a strat today that had sync on then a couple mins (like 5 or so) later, Capt. Chaos joined then Beauford. What gives? I'm confused.

Then I assume something happened to the host after those two joined then he left and then I lost connection.

Edit: The name was Beauford, not Beaumont.

That is impossible and never happens.

The game you were in was Sync OFF.

Nevermind then. I must be going insane then.
