greetings, i am new to this forum and have a puzzling problem, to which i haven't found a solution through internet searches: i have an original battlezone cd-rom which i can't install under XP, but as opposed to normal cases where it either returns an error or succeeds in installing the game, my installer just... well, exits without doing anything. here's a weird detail tho': when i enter the install folder on the CD, i can't find a setup.exe file, is this normal? thanks in advance for taking interest, sorry if i accidentally made something hilariously and blatantly wrong

Hi, There are few versions of original Bz CD's. I for example have Xplosiv version and I have to change my language settings to UK English to be able to start it. Otherwise, it's giving me black screen and I have to End Task. Xplosiv version also has no setup.exe in the install folder, but it's not really needed, cause after main setup is started, later it's just copy-paste from CD to your hard disk. You should also try to run setup.exe in Win98 compatibility mode. When you make it, don't forget to check F.A.Q on "How to play original Bz on Windows XP?".

thanks, tried but it didn't really work for me... (i do have the poor xplosiv version, BTW, as disappointing as it is.) i actually caved in and got the 1.4N version, i was afraid that it might be missing something compared to the original game, but so far i see no real difference. i'm currently having a hard time making 3D acceleration work properly, but that story's for another topic thanks anyway for taking the time to recommend a solution that no doubt will help somebody else solve the original problem, much appreciated!

Shame that didn't help. Even though it's too late now, I checked my Xplosiv... There's main setup.exe and another setup.exe in "Setup" folder. I guess main one calls other one, so it shouldn't make a difference, but next time you could try starting that one from the folder, not the main one. Also in compatibility mode and with UK English settings. As for Bz 1.4N, nothing from the original game is missing. It is stock game + fixes and some optional custom changes. Everything is counted on N's download page.

Well, well... After having read mr Spock's post, it dawned to me that I was a victim of the "UK English" bug in XPLOSIV's version. I ordered 2 copies of BZ around 5 years ago (maybe more?) and had been really annoyed by the "black screen and exiting" behaviour of the installer. I contacted XPLOSIV's tech guys in the UK and I was even asked to return the CD to them (which I did) and they tried it and said all was ok. See, I live in Greece, so the system language was set to "Greek" and they knew that but somehow this issue didn't cross their minds at all... Pitty. I had the CD's in a rack until today, when I read this post, really late. But, better late than never. Anyhow, the new "BZ 1998 all in one" installer works great and I used it to reinstall BZ after quite a long while on my machines. Also, one of my sons is already a fan of it and learning fast. Battlezone lives on !

Funny thing is that I read about the "UK-thing" on their website , which seems to be gone now. Good to hear about Terminator junior.
