Thanks for the thorough answer ... those instructions will help. As soon as I download Battlezone 1998 though. I actually installed the game using my 11 years old game cd, and then I saw that everyone switched to that handy all-in-one package. That`s what I`ll do before tinkering with the game itself...

The HP Pavilion Notebook got taken over by a virus, so to have Internet, I had to get out the old Windows 98 desktop PC. This computer is so slow, I had to fight to get a decent framerate in BZ. Between the 400MHz Intel Celeron processor, only 32 MB of RAM, and the ATI 3D Rage IIc AGP 4 MB Graphics card, you only begin to have a smooth game in SW mode with all textures turned OFF. I also reduced visibility to 100. My FPS is lower in window than it is fullscreen. I actually managed to reach 55 FPS in full screen, and by zooming in on terrain, I managed 60.7 FPS one time! But remember, it looks like this: and putting terrain detail to even "LOW RES" will cut framerate in half, getting 15-25 FPS full screen.

Baldrick wrote: It's not that bad. At least you have radar! Very true. EDIT: Here's another ss, I downloaded IrfanView 4.25, and on this machine apparently for anything to work while BZ runs, BZ must be in window. About 50% of ss's taken with IrfanView fail, creating an empty 0 kb file. My ss hotkey is completely ignored when BZ is full screen. My BZ looks retro. ROFL, paint can't save as PNG on Windows 98, but IrfanView can take PNG ss's, and they can be viewed with IrfanView.

Seems that "How your Bz looks like" thread was too complicated for you. I guess uploading of pictures turned some of you off. It was supposed to help us make database of working and not working systems (with BZ), to be able to isolate general problems and fix them after enough info is gathered. BZ almost died when WinXP came and today we have XP fix, so everything is possible. I'm sick of seeing 1 player playing BZ on Vista with no issues, other player having major graphical issues and third uninstalling BZ cause of constant UE's. Let's help each other! Ok, now new topic and no excuses this time. Post your system specs here and say whether BZ works for you in HW mode or not. If not, say does it work in SW mode and Window mode. Only thing that matters about your specs is Windows with bit version, graphic card with driver version and how much GB of RAM. Of course, say what you did to make it working if it didn't work with default values (like XP compatibility). Also, you should say if you don't have the newest BZ installer (with all patches and fixes, and with BZ options and render.cfg already configured for most PC's). I have next: WinXP, 32bit ATI HD4850, Catalyst 9.9 (latest) 3 GB of RAM - everything works flawlessly Win7, 64bit (WinXP compatibility on bzone.exe due 4GB of RAM) ATI HD4850, Catalyst 9.9 (latest) 4 GB of RAM - HW mode (3D on) - can't get into main menu, but SP launched from Config Utility works flawlessly - SW mode (3D off) - works, but with a lot of issues - Window mode (640x480) - flawlessly WinXP, 32bit ATI X800, Catalyst 9.8 (latest) 2 GB of RAM - everything works flawlessly Win7, 64bit ATI X800, Catalyst 9.8 (latest) 2 GB of RAM - HW mode (3D on) - can't get into main menu, but SP launched from Config Utility works flawlessly - SW mode (3D off) - works, but with a lot of issues - Window mode (640x480) - flawlessly WinXP, 32bit ATI 9200, Catalyst 6.11 (final) 448 MB of RAM - everything works flawlessly

Here's what I can figure out about my machine: - Windows XP, Home, 2002 Service Pack 3 - Dell Inspiron 910 - Dual Core Intel Atom @ 1.60 GHz each. - 0.99 GB of RAM - Apparently no driver for my graphics card I don't know what card I have. This computer has previously gone through a total system failure and the graphics card hasn't been installed correctly, so a lot of games I can't play. Ironically, Battlezone works flawlessly no matter what mode I run it in, with the exception of low FPS rates (20 FPS average, but I don't expect anything better). It's never crashed or refused to run except when I was missing .bzn files (uninstalled IA maps). I'm also not sure where I'm supposed to be looking for all this information. Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHZ NVIDIA GTX 285 1G Windows 7 Hey all, thanks so much for this! I remember playing battlezone back in the day and loving it! Looking forward to returning to the good old days! However, there are two problems. Problem 1: Game cannot be run in hardware mode. Problem 2: When run in software mode, the graphics on objects look like those in the picture below : I am hoping this to be a Windows 7 issue:

WinXP 32bit NVIDIA 9600gt - latest driver
Hardware mode: Everything looks normal, except the frame rate drops slowly untill it's unplayable and the yellow crash screen appears. (when it drops too low i 'reset' it by pressing escape and return to game. This only works in a resolution of 800x600 or higher.) Also the more units and action, the faster the framerate drops.
Software mode: No issues at all.

Windows Vista Business 32bit Intel Core 2 Duo 3070MB RAM nVidia GeForce 8400m GS Hardware in compatibility mode works in 640x480 with only the usual nVidia issues, (poor radar, poor gunfire and random white squares) Software mode runs flawlessly in windowed mode. Speaking of which ZAchtank has nVidia and says it runs flawlessly? Explain more about this update! Edited by admin:http://battlezone1.freeforums.org/bz-on-vista-nvidia-t829.html

I'm getting an Unhandled Exception error upon loading a level from the menu.
I returned to Vista, and now cannot play fullscreen software mode either, although I can watch cutscenes, and the colors are back to normal. The only mode that seems to work is windowed software/hardware. However, in this mode, mouse sensitivity sucks...

You have dual boot with Vista and 7? Should be XP and 7. On XP everything works and Vista is something like damaged version of 7. Navbeacon has it working on his Nvidia and Win7 - http://battlezone1.freeforums.org/post5146.html#p5146, so you should be able to make it work too, in HW mode. Your pic looks like you don't have installer version from this site... Did you try playing with compatibility mode (WinXP), BZ resolution (800x600), render.cfg and Nvidia control panel?

If you have current BZ installer then you haven't missed anything. But the sound is in the code so you shouldn't have issues even with the regular CD install. First, update your sound card driver. Second, play a little with your audio control panel. Like Gormo and DO did.
