This is pathetic. I have a Gateway FX laptop with Vista Home Premium 64bit and Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS. After installing BZ98, all I get is an error telling me that there isn't enough memory, that I need at least 50MB free on my hard drive ( I have 123 GB free!) and to make sure virtual memory isn't disabled (It's not)

Oh, cruel fate! Why can't I be one of the few with BZ working on Vista? Why can't DO's video be available? Have I forgotten to do something?

You can override memory issue by running it in XP compatibility.

Thanks, Spock, I'll try that at the next opportunity and see if it helps.

Well, XP compatibility didn't work to resolve my memory error with BZ98. Now I get the same error I get on the pre-BZ98 install I did: The program starts, gets to a black screen, and stops responding. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to the Task manager and End Task to get out of it.

Progress? Eh, I'd rather be playing the game than looking at a black screen.

When I install BZ98, is there anything else I need to do after the install? I can't see DO's video tute on making BZ compatible, but I don't even know if that process is necessary with the BZ98 installer.

Any other suggestions?

I didn't say you will be able to play with compatibility mode on, I said how to get pass the memory issue, which you did. Unfortunately, we don't have 64bit Vista user, with a working Bz, posting here yet...

That black screen happens before you even see the menu? If that's so, you get the same error I get on my Win7 64bit.

I described what DO did in his tutorial, video is not really needed, but I know many who didn't make their BZ work by following it. ACT didn't work for my Win7 either, even though I experimented with different settings for days (I still try something else from time to time).

I'm afraid only thing that's left for you to do is run BZ in a window or in SW mode. That should work. It's not like HW mode, but at least you will be able to play...

I'm already running it in a window, but I can't recall how to run Bz in SW mode. And where did you descibe DO's tutorial? Thanks for your help.

To run in SW mode you need to turn 3D card OFF in graphic options in BZ or add /sw to the shortcut. Or use this and uncheck "Enable 3D Card". and start BZ/RO.

downloaded and tried your utility, Spork. Works great except that I get the same issue with BZ; I get a black screen and it stops responding, in both fullscreen and windowed, with or without 3d card enabled.

Spock, I have ACT downloaded, now if only I had DO's video tute or the instructions ...

When you get black screen, before the map launches or before the game even starts?

ACT description, post before yours:

The black screen appears before the game even starts. As soon as I double-click bzone.exe's shortcut, or the Config app's START button, the screen goes black and stays there. If in windowed mode, the window first appears black and stays that way. If fullscreen, also black in the same manner. And when I bring up the task manager, Battlezone is listed as "Not Responding".

I see your instructions there, thanks. But I have no idea how to even begin with ACT. I found Battlezone in the ACT listing, but nothing is editable. And I'm being cautious about delving into it blindly because Vista is already a fickle and skittish beast, and I don't want to screw things up any more than Microsoft already has. :D

Strange... you should be able to play in SW and Window mode on any machine...

Yeah, I'll have to expand that ACT explanation...

you have to copy paste battlezone from the right to the new database on the left side.
then in a new right window find bzone.exe and right click on it - edit application fix
now u do those checks i mentioned
auto generate - save
right click on a new database - install

Yeah, strange is the word for it. My gear is a Gateway FX gaming laptop (http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668231.php).

Maybe I didn't apply the switch in the shortcut properly. But I did try to use Sporkinator's utility to turn off the 3d card, but I got the same black screen, windowed and full.

Thanks for the added ACT info, I'll try it and let you know. BTW, have you heard any feedback from anyone attempting to use BZ in map editor mode on Vista?

I guess I'll go play Halo for a while. Hmph.

Maybe You should try to run BZ in compatibility mode?

Yeah, thanks Pycckuu, I already suggested him that... I split that topic so you didn't see it. Sorry for the confusion. Now I made edits on the original topic, to avoid that in the future. Moving your post there too...

Thanks for your help, Spock. I've tried ACT with your suggested additions to the original settings, and I get the same thing; the window appears, but remains black and I have to three-finger-salute the thing to get out of it. When I use the CD, I get the splash screen, and I can click PLAY, and since it crashed before, I can choose Hardware or Software, but neither works. I get the same black screen. I would think it would crash when the 3d card's resources were called upon, when gameplay actually starts, but not before, not at the first menu screens.

Setting the NVidia card via its own control panel to the lowest settings didn't help. usnavyfish's post instructions didn't help. At this point I'm ready to uninstall every version of BZ I have. I'll keep monitoring the forum here, so if someone has an epiphany, or someone posts complete instructions (starting from the initial game installation, specifying which BZ versions this ACT thing works with, and whether I need separate databases installed for original, 1.4, and BZ98), hopefully I'll see it.

I think I might be missing something by getting the instructions in pieces, some critical step that I'm unaware of. ACT says the db was installed successfully, and it shows up in the list of installed db's.

Those of you who can play, I hope you consider yourselves fortunate.

Be sure to uninstall not working ACT patch, when trying all over. You do that from ACT.
