Windows7 64bit, release candidate. Graphic card ATI HD 4850. Drivers 9.5 (05/2009) & 9.6 (06/2009). Graphic card ATI x800. Drivers from Win7.
- After installation of Battlezone 1998 installer, WindowsXP Compatibility mode is required on a PC with more than 3GB of RAM (HD4850 PC) - There's no IPX protocol (not in Vista either). - Hardware mode, full screen doesn't work, it gives UE. - Multi player is available in hardware mode while in Window Mode, but with FPS bug. - Single player is available directly over Config Utility, but without menus (hardware mode, full screen). - Instant action missions are available over shortcuts in Start menu (hardware mode, full screen). - Software mode looks awful, it's unplayable. - Experimenting with ACT wasn't helpful.
Conclusion: Win 7 and ATI card are only good for IA missions and maybe for SP. For MP, dual boot with WinXP or any previous version of Windows is needed.

NVIDIA still works though. But the radar is all white squares and the textures flicker like crazy. Other then that its all right, game seems to flow better! Strat will be hard though.

Spock, can you explain what you mean by "Single player is available directly over Config Utility, but without menus (hardware mode, full screen)."?
Without menus? You mean dropping right into the mission and bypassing the menus?
Since mine keeps locking up the instant it starts, I'm wondering if I can do the same, jump right into the first mission or an IA mission. But then, how would I set controls and mosue sensitivity?

I can launch BZ in a window and configure options. Then with Config Utility (it's in BZ98 installer) under "Test these Settings", I select mission I want and click on "Start".

Ah, yes, that trivial step of getting BZ to run at all.

BZ options are BZPLYR.def, BZ keys are Gamekey.map & Input.map. Map files can be edited with notepad and BZPLYR.def can be given to you by someone esle if you specify how you want it. Like that you could at least play single player, while working on a multiplayer...

So windows 7 is out today, I downloaded the upgrade advisor, and BZ 1998 is listed as one of the programs which is incompatible. Is this true? Spock, I was under the impression you had 7 (or a beta) and were running it. Thoughts?
EDIT, efficient reply method. like it.

Ok, Battlezone WILL NOT WORK. Nothing, windowed, not windowed, software hardware. Nothing, zilch nada.
However,
I clicked on Red Odyssey out of interest, and it ran. Though when I upgraded to 7 Daemon Tools was uninstalled, and after a lot of messing round I gave up on daemon tools. It and 7 don't work. SO, I searched for another program that mounted ISOs and found SlySoft's Virtual clone drive, Works exactly the same. And TRO runs perfectly. Hardware mode unwindowed. (still that damn Nvidia problem but I can make my peace with that for now.) So is there still a version of Battlezone 98 that needs an ISO? I want to try that and see if that will run on 7.

Not pointing finger at anyone, but if I learned something over the years of reading posts in Technical Support section, it is that I shouldn't take anything for granted. Not before at least 2 persons post the same thing. On this topic we have navbeacon saying his BZ works on Win7/Nvidia and Baldrick saying it doesn't. And I use Deamon Tools in 7 just fine, while Baldrick is saying he can't make it work... Baldrick, you haven't explained what "will not work" exactly means, but I know that I get UE before I even see the main menu and the "CD thing" appears when you want to make a game. I know you will not find peace until you try it anyway, so check attachment. If your RO works, BZ should work too. Copy paste render.cfg and bzplyr.def from RO to BZ and try again.

By not working I mean nothing, I click on the icon, or the config utility start option and nothing happens until windows says "this isn't working do you want us to send an error report?" and then I get an error message saying the program won't initialise. There's no windows popping up with UEs or any signs of life at all. The daemon tools thing was just generally incompatible, but the other program does teh same thing fine, so i'm not bothered about that. I will check the download tomorrow when I'm home. I think that the difference is the way RO and BZ work on 98, e.g. that RO needs to be ISO mounted to run.
I'll see how it goes.

That works perfectly, I copied the new bzone.exe into the battlezone folder, mounted the ISO and the game ran straight off. There were a few issues such as no spinning menu buttons, or planet views in the briefing screen. I fixed these by going into properties on the new bzone.exe, compat mode, administrator and 640x480. and it runs exactly the same as it did on vista. Now perhaps if I can get a break from degree work I can actually play. Perhaps that new user should try the same thing?

I appreciate the effort, but what are you saying can't be the truth.
It must be the remainings of ACT patch that are blocking 1st exe to work. Try uninstalling.

You're correct, it's not the ISO thing. The reason that .exe file worked and the other didn't was because when i pasted it in I chose to 'move but keep both files' this meant that it was named bzone(2).exe, and as such the ACT fixes I had didn't apply to it. I confirmed this by renaming my original .exe to bzone(1).exe and it worked again. When I uninstalled all the ACTs the bz1998 .exe worked fine again. Moral of the story seems to be don't bother with ACT in 7. However, it is worth running in 640 x 480 and in a standard compatibility mode, to get all the menu videos. However, Daemon tools is not 7 compatible so If anyone wants to run the Red Odyssey they should use this link and download Virtual Clone Drive which does. http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.htmlHope that clears some of the confusion.

Or maybe not...
Today nothing. start up the laptop and it won't run bz. or TRO, quick system restore to two days ago reveals no hope. Just getting the 0xc0000005 error message.
Edit: it's working now after a restart, however, Everyone's Pings are sky high! up in the 2000s!
